Bio

Rebecca Marta D’Andrea is a movement artist born in International Artistic Community of Bussana Vecchia. She is based between UK, Italy and Brazil. Her work explores improvisational forms of creativity across different mediums, to unravel the ongoing dialogue between our inner and outer environment.

She is interested in the potential of the creative body to enhance the communication between different languages in the process of building and outbuilding our perception of reality and sense of identity, as a solo and as a collective process, part of an overall system of interconnected phenomena in constant transformation.

This title cover as umbrella my latest research process, which took various form before and post the Pandemic time.

It has been, a journey ,a lecture demonstration, a workshop, an artistic residency,an encounter,a site specific performance,a video,a music composition..and it is still transforming.

The main focus is the exploration of the malleable boundaries between form and content through active imagination, movement and creativity as strategies to reveal, embody and rewire aspects of our archive of conscious and unconscious memories. How do we relate to our environment in this deeper state of attention? How does that shape the orientation of our individual and collective body?

In this process I explore synesthesia as a way to access the unknown but yet known, through subtle threads that reconnect our collective and individual sense of Self in constant transformation.

I embark in this research in various context, living in eco-villages, communities and during artistic residencies focussed on ‘process’ as a shared practice.

Some of the research resulted in the collaboration with other artists met on the path, through photos, video art, art installations, songs, and creative labs.

#STARE (2017), various locations (Uk/IT/online):

The theme of the research for #STARe is an investigation of the multiplicity of informations stored within the present moment. How does our attentive state shape the set of information we gather from the reality around us? Can we tap an reshape the set of vibrations we are aligned with or in other words: can we tune in to a deeper quality of attention and reset our paradigms of time and space?

The body is explored as a live archive in constant transformation, containing the intersections of a transpersonal as well as a personal sense of past, present and future, with the potential to interact on a molecular level with the inner and outer context where they germinates, opening new dimensional fields of dialogue. The performer explores time and space through movement , spoken words and song. Presented at Clem Teatro, Bussana Vecchia International Community of Artists(IM); Ecite 2017, Tuscania(VT);Anomalie, Cavallerizza Irreale, Turin, and online as part as OpenOnline Theatre Platform of Ijad Dance Company.

Kinaesthetic Body Walks :Is there a universal language travelling across the gravity field, that doesn’t belong to learnt parameters of time and space, and that our bodies can comprehend somehow when we reconnect to our kinaesthetic sense within the simple act of walking?‘’The process is one of learning what to attend to both overtly and covertly’(Gibson, 1966, The Senses Considered as Perceptual Systems). A series of sensorial ‘performative’ walks, inviting a group of participants to dress up and ‘get lost’ together in the city. During each walk, each participant chooses to be blindfolded or ear plugged and pair up with a complementary partner. The group will have a chance to re-experience the urban scape and negotiate together a direction to follow and at an agreed signal the site encountered will be explored through a contemplative moment of resonance. (presented at Open Senses Festival 2017,London and Fun Palaces 2017, Bristol with the support of Bristol University Department of Health.) Humus Campus (Torino, June 2018).

Reconnecting Bristol: Body as a Context for Reconnections. This project offers an interactive space for the visitors of the Reconnecting Bristol Exhibition to engage in the act or remembering disused places in the city and embody physical sensations emerging by ‘re-tracing’ them on paper as a contemplative practice. An armchair, a blank wall, drawing material and paper are provided, with the suggestion to sit, relax, close the eyes and allow memories to arise and let the hands transfer onto paper a mark of their resonance. In a series of live interactions, performers engage in an embodiment of their memories related to disused sites. Movement is accompanied by sounds collected from different sites and dialogues with the work presented in the exhibition and the traces left on paper by the visitors, as coordinates of an imaginary map of a new time and space. Concept: Rebecca Marta D’Andrea Sounds: Marcell Gulyas, Aya Zebrowska. Live Exploration : Silvia Carderelli Gronau, Rebecca Marta D’Andrea, Holly Thomas. COLAB, Bristol, September 2016.

Tracing Invisible Identities. This project, composed as part of the Independent Project of the MA Creative Practice of Trinity Laban, Independent Dance, Siobhan Davies Dance, investigates the relationship between the body and its inner and outer environments, as a negotiation between imagined and concrete landscapes in constant transformation. The dancing body explores landmarks of the imagination, mapping the unravelling of a path through space that , accompanied by live projections , is constantly rearranged in relationship to an ‘inner journey’.

The process is documented through video and as part of my final thesis.

Performers: Rebecca Marta D’Andrea, Natalie Claire Ridge, Yuiming Wong. Soundscape: Daniel Cioccoloni. London, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, May-July 2016.

The project has been presented in April at Dance Fields Conference 2017 convened by Centre for Dance Research (C-DaRE), Coventry University; Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Dance (CIRID), De Montfort University and Centre for Dance Research (CDR), University of Roehampton and in December 2017 as part of Work Processing: a Forum for the Sharing of Live Practice.

Intrecci, Artistic Residency at Lago Film Festival for Lago Pulsart. An interactive installation and performance project, gathering memories from visitors and inhabitants of Lago (TV, Italy). Within the context of the Film Festival, the village was remapped through tagging, land marking and storytelling aspects of its archival history as carried by the living bodies of its temporary and permanent inhabitants. Lago,(TV, Italy), July 2015.

Totem- Archeology of Movement. A study of hidden and known memories enclosed within the body through a mapping of felt sensations. How can we identify the resonance of layers of past that are enclosed in our present moment, and acknowledge their impact on the way we move and our decision making? Is our way of moving a constant recognition, reverberation and rearrangement of elements of our past? How does our past define our sense of identity? The solo, has been created as part of the Investigative Practice Module of the MA in Creative Practice with the mentoring support of choreographer Rosemary Butcher and Kirsty Alexander, and was presented in Venice in August 2015 as part of the exhibition SELF Memories, at Venice Art House, at Independent Dance in September 2015 as part of the Feedback Forum sessions, and The Island Open Studios, Bristol. The ‘score’ used for the solo ‘Totem: Archeology of the body’, created has been published in the anthology “Performance Project: accomplices of a Present Scene” curated by Max Schiavoni.

Dance in Words. A poetry emerging from movement and movement merging with poetry, exploring the tension between a felt sense of narratives and abstract movement. Kuumba Live, October 2013, Dance Hub Open Day December 2013, Bristol (UK).

Experience in Uk

Between 2012 and 2016 she has mainly been based in Bristol, where she became more interested in investigating of how a dance practice could promote a sustainable dialogue within a community. Her movement research focussed on ways into finding strategies to access layers of collective and individual subconscious ‘meaning’ contained by the body, and their possible dialogue with the external environment.

As well as teaching elements of her own research at Dance Space The Island Studios in Bristol, performing in collaboration with artists from other disciplines, she has been part of Dance Hub Bristol and Bristol Contact Improvisation Core Group, as teacher, co-organizer and performer.

Whilst maintaining a contact with Italy, she organized a series of artistic residencies in the Artistic Community of Bussana Vecchia, where she was born, inviting artists to research and reflect about the value of their artistic discourse within a community.

Since 2017 she returned more often to Italy, mainly in Turin collaborating with local artists in a variety of projects (Arcadia PAN-K Ensemble, Olga Canavesio, Pietra Tonale, Stefano Floreani,Sham Anna Electrorganic Music,Ameris,BeatEngine).

Past Projects in Italy, Hungary and Germany

In 2007 she was artist in residence at Inteatro festival Academy (IFA 07, Villa Nappi, Polverigi ) where she created the video installation ‘You are my Home’, presented as part of the SPLASH section of the Festival.

In 2010 she was a finalist in the professional development programme GD’A Veneto with the solo Disabitata-Dresshead supported by Operatestate Festival, Arteven and Regione Veneto, winner of the Movin’Up 2011 Bursary Scheme.

The solo, through a proprioceptive approach to movement, investigates the potential of subverting the use of an everyday object like a dress, to open a journey into personal and transpersonal subconscious.

In Summer 2011 she was artist in residence at Lago Film Festival, where, in collaboration with Movimento Denso and Dani Salton she created the work ‘Punti di Svista’, a participatory performance where audience members were taken on a one to one journey to re-perceive the areas of the festival through an ‘editing’ of their sensorial experience.

In Autumn 2011 she was selected as artist in residence with the project ‘The Void‘ as part of the ‘Research Into The Unknown’ Improvisation Laboratory In Budapest, organised by Workshop Foundation, supported by Departs and Hungarian Minister of Culture, researching in collaboration with local artists, how the quantum physics definition of the term could be a starting point for improvisation, and presented in a final performance in December 2013 at MU Szinaz.

In February 2012 the solo ‘When’, an elaboration of ‘The Void’ project, was a finalist in the Premio Equilibrio 2012 in Rome.

In 2012 during the residency P.O.R.C.H. Ponderosa Professional Programme (Germany) she developed the project ‘Practice for Embodied Freedom‘, a serie of short experimental performances exploring how internal dynamics within our body-mind can affect the way we connect to one other and our environment, which was presented in Berlin in space K77, and in Bristol as part of Testing Ground Platform with the project ‘Embrace‘.

In July 2015 she was artist in residence at Lago Pulsart, of Lago Film Fest, where she worked on the site specific -project ‘Intrecci‘. During the residency she interviewed some of the inhabitants, and gathered memories of ‘significant sensations’ related to specific places, to remap the memorial archive of the old part of the village where the festival takes place every year. These memories where replaced through ‘written tags’ and during the exhibition the audience could add new memories, forming and transforming the path, layering past and present and future memories. Memories where embodied again by its inhabitants in a performance. In collaboration with DENSO an audio file has been produced, gathering interviews and can be listened to accompany a memory walk through the village.

In August 2015 she directed the choreographic project ‘Les Etoiles Qui Tombent’ in Bussana Vecchia International Village of Artists in Collaboration with Jija Sohn’s dance company and Teatro Carillon.

During the years she collaborated with musicians and visual artists (Movimento DENSO,Vittorio Demarin aka Formellana, Dani Salton, Tamara Dibs, Maurizio Falcone, Valentina Collura, Thollem McDonas, Bolcso Balint, Greg Balasz, The Just Desserts, Gavin Maxwell, Neil Harbisson, Sara Easby, Chiara Bizzarra Giovanelli), co-created cross-art performances (Moving Sound Ensemble, Hong-La Durata, Kuumba Live Creation, Teatro Carillon) participated in the research process and performed in the work of other choreographers and directors (Pietro Marullo,Rosanna Irvine,H2 Dance Company, Stephania Mylona, Laura Moro, Dragana Bulut, Rosanna Irvine, Freddie Opoku Addaie, Dana Ruttenberg, Ovsyannikova Dance, Andrea Maciel, Teatro Città di Treviso, Teatro Artigiano, Collettivo di Ricerca Teatrale, The Living Collective) and collaborated with theatre companies (Common Wealth Theatre, Rolling Stage, Ass.Cult. Deposito Bagagli, Gruppo ‘Il Gabbiano’).
